VIDEO: “Sustainable Aviation Fuels” are Just Greenwashing
A record number of American travelers journeyed by plane across the country to be with their families during Thanksgiving weekend, which meant that record carbon emissions were released into the atmosphere.
CBS News reports that airports are now attempting to rebrand themselves as “sustainable” or “carbon zero.” Chuck Collins tells the network that airports and industry lobbyists are “essentially saying, ‘We’ve got this covered. You’re worried about carbon emissions and global warming? Keep flying — you don’t have to change your behavior at all!’ To me, that’s greenwashing.”
Aviation is remarkably carbon intensive — especially private jet travel, as research by Chuck and other IPS experts has shown. They’ve also found that so-called sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) are a marketing distraction, not a scalable reality.
“It’s magical thinking,” Chuck told CBS. “We are not going to scale alternative aviation fuel at the speed of climate change. They need to be talking about the planes — the activity that is their reason for existing.”
