Europe’s Push for Greater Mineral Independence

Like much of the world, Europe is trying to reduce its dependence on outside sources of critical minerals. In five years, for instance, it aims to cut its reliance on outside suppliers of rare earth ores from 95 percent to 42 percent and on processed rare earths from 100 percent to 60 percent.
How does Europe plan to accomplish these ambitious goals? Two experts from the European policy community, Diego Marin and Robin Roels will explain the RESourceEU Action plan and discuss its implications for the rest of the world.
- Diego Marin is Senior Policy Officer for Raw Materials and Resource Justice at the European Environmental Bureau. He holds a Masters in International Development with a specialization in Political Strategy and Communication from the University of Kent, Brussels School of International Studies.
- Robin Roels is active in the field of resource justice, extractivism, and critical raw materials policy. He has worked as a Resource Justice Assistant at the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and was a volunteer at CATAPA, a member of the EEB.Robin has a degree in Conflict and Development Studies from Ghent University, where he specialized in resource conflicts and protests.
