Genuine Progress Project

The Genuine Progress Project is working to shift the economic system’s defining value from money to life, its locus of decision making from global to local, its favored dynamic from competition to cooperation, its defining ethic from externalizing costs to embracing responsibility, and its primary purpose from growing individual financial fortunes for a few to building living community wealth to enhance the health and well-being of everyone.

The Genuine Progress Project is a founding partner in the New Economy Working Group. A key “action cluster” of the New Economy Working Group is Living Wealth Indicators. We believe the Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI) shows the greatest promise in advancing our transition from growth in GDP as the measure and goal of economic activity to improvements in human, social, and environmental health as the proper measure and goal.  The U.S. State of Maryland was the first jurisdiction to put the GPI in place; Vermont soon followed, and other countries, states and municipalities are contemplating following suit.

The Genuine Progress project is coordinated by IPS Fellow Daphne Wysham. Our Maryland Field Director is David Hart.

Obama is finally showing us he is willing to fight - on coal, on tar sands, and on climate. His apparent willingness to challenge the climate impacts of coal and tar sands - after years of silence on both topics - is cause for some celebration.

Advancing Genuine Progress

Standard economic growth indicators aren't yielding enough information, especially when it comes to inequality.
