Esteemed DC Writer-Activist Supports Social Justice on His 60th Birthday

(WASHINGTON)—Poet and literary activist E. Ethelbert Miller will make his birthday celebration a reading, book signing, and fundraiser to support the work of two progressive organizations. All proceeds from the event, which will take place Saturday Nov. 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Busboys & Poets 5th and K street location, will be split between the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and Provisions Library (a.k.a. Provisions Learning Project). Miller serves as board chair for both organizations.
IPS is a community of public scholars and organizers linking peace, justice, and the environment in the U.S. and globally. This is done by working with social movements to promote true democracy and challenge concentrated wealth, corporate influence, and military power. The Provisions Learning Project is a social change learning resource that amplifies compelling voices that challenge and redefine the mainstream. Its library and online services are a trusted source for alternative perspectives on a wide range of social change topics and its innovative exhibitions and public projects strongly engage the arts as a powerful means of exploring social issues.
Miller is widely considered a cultural icon. He has won many literary awards. He is a board member of The Writer's Center and an editor of Poet Lore magazine. He has been the director of the African American Resource Center at Howard University since 1974 and is one of the founders of the Humanities Council of Washington, D.C., as well as a former core faculty member of the Bennington Writing Seminars at Bennington College.
Miller's 60th birthday celebration will include a retrospective reading and book signing along with laughs and good times. In lieu of gifts, he is requesting donations for IPS and Provisions Library.
