[VIDEO] The Impact at Home of U.S. Troops Around The World
December 29, 2011 · By Phyllis Bennis
Callers from around the country ask about the presence of U.S. troops around the world, their role, and how U.S. military capabilities compare with other countries in this C-SPAN Washington Journal segment.
On Christmas' Eve, I was on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, talking about the Iraq troop withdrawal but mostly about the deployment of U.S. military forces in the Middle East and internationally.
A thousand foreign U.S. military bases around the world don’t keep us or the people of their host countries safe. Hundreds of billions of dollars spent on those bases is no good. There is a need to close the bases so we have money for jobs, health care and more.
Almost every caller, from the separate Democrat, Republican and Military phone lines, agreed with almost everything I said. It was a real tribute to the work our movement has done over these long years, in education, mobilization, and more.
I couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, Solstice or Generic-Holiday-for-Atheists gift.
