What do The Movement for Black Lives, Fight for 15, and North Carolina’s Forward Together Moral Movement have in common? In addition to being some of the most important social movements in recent history, they all have black women labor leaders at the helm or playing significant leadership roles.

Sitting at the intersections of the movements for racial and economic justice, worker’s rights and women’s rights, black women in labor have an important perspective on what it will take to build power by building partnerships between emerging, black-led social activism and the labor movement.

And Still I Rise, a project of the Institute for Policy Studies’ Black Worker Initiative, brings the voices, power and promise of black women labor leaders to bear in shaping strategies for economic justice and social change. The project launched with the release of a Five Rivers, a space designed for reflection and innovation, where leaders and ideas converge. Five Rivers was launched in 2015 by Michael Bell, a leading expert in transformative learning and leadership development for social change agents.
