This brown bag forum, Climate Justice and the U.S. – Mexico Border: How Militarized Immigration Enforcement Hurts Climate Change-Impacted Communities brings together an investigative journalist who covers the increasing militarization of the U.S.-Mexico border and its implications for climate justice, with a local activist from Sanctuary DMV, who organizes for immigrants’ rights in the District-Maryland-Virginia area. They will address how militarized U.S. immigration and border policy is criminalizing vulnerable people who are displaced by poverty, violence, instability, and increasingly, climate change, and are forced to migrate to survive. They will also discuss the growing resistance movements fighting for the human rights of migrants.

Speakers:

• Todd Miller, an investigative journalist who has written on border and immigration issues for The New York Times, Al Jazeera America, and the NACLA Report on the Americas. His new book, Storming the Wall: Climate Change, Migration, and Homeland Security has just been published by City Lights Books.
• Brandon Wu, an organizer with Sanctuary DMV and Director of Policy & Campaigns at ActionAid USA. He helps run Sanctuary DMV’s accompaniment program, supporting individuals at their ICE check-ins and immigration court appointments. He leads ActionAid’s work on international climate justice, approaching the problem of climate change from the perspective of sustainable development and rights of impacted people.
