America’s war on drugs has proved to be futile as drug cartels have fueled violence on the U.S.-Mexican border. Sanho Tree, director of the Drug Policy Project at the Institute for Policy Studies, explains how U.S. policy on illegal drugs has contributed to the issue.

“The catch-22 of the drug war [is that] the more you escalate it, the more valuable these drugs tend to become,” Tree said.
