A LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR & BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends,

For five decades, IPS has endured as a non-partisan, progressive resource for social movements. We are proud to have you alongside us as we continue to offer visionary research, writing, and hands-on support to activists and allied groups. Together, we will remember 2016 not for the election but as the year that a new generation of resistance was born.

Our 2016 milestones include a participatory study exploring the needs of families of incarcerated youth, a new book recruiting the wealthy to join the fight against inequality, and a groundbreaking report connecting the climate movement to peace movement through the lens of the military budget. Our experts earned hundreds of media hits all over the globe on everything from drug policy in New Zealand to the war on terror in the Middle East, to retirement security for low-wage workers in the U.S. As with all movement stories, each moment builds upon the one before. For example, our ongoing work with grassroots partners in El Salvador in 2016 paved the way for a historic victory against metals mining this year.

Inside IPS, we’ve been readying to weather the storms of the years ahead. We welcomed several new and talented members to the IPS staff in 2016, and together we have come up with strategies to ensure our work remains relevant in this era.

This sense of renewal has also manifested in our physical space. In February 2016, we opened the doors of our new office in DuPont Circle. At its heart is the Barnet-Raskin conference room, a new hub for collaboration and a gathering place for progressive allies.

Finally, this year marks the end of Ethelbert’s tenure as chair of the IPS Board of Directors. As we celebrate his legacy we’re excited to welcome another writer, Tope Folarin, to step up to the plate. Actor and social justice activist Danny Glover has also joined our board. He follows in the footsteps of luminary Harry Belafonte.

We are ready for what comes next. We are so grateful for you and our entire community of friends and supporters who are with us on this journey.

Onward,

John Cavanagh and Ethelbert Miller

40TH ANNUAL HUMAN
RIGHTS AWARDS 2016

Since 1976, IPS has hosted an annual human rights awards ceremony to honor the memory of Orlando Letelier and Ronni Karpen Moffitt by celebrating brave changemakers who are making a positive impact on their local communities while championing human rights in the United States and across Latin America and the Caribbean.

2016 marked the 40th anniversary of the Letelier-Moffitt assassinations. In lieu of selecting new awardees for the Letelier-Moffitt Human Rights Awards, IPS chose to honor all previous recipients. The event was emceed by Jodie Evans, co-founder and co-director of CODEPINK, and Larry Stafford, Executive Director of Progressive Maryland and the audience had the opportunity to celebrate and hear from past award-winners in person and through multimedia presentations. Some of the honorees who joined us included: Almudena Bernabeu and C. Dixon Osburn of the Center for Justice and Accountability; Seymour Hersh; Sarita Gupta, Jobs With Justice; Jonathan Hutto for Appeal for Redress, Bertha Oliva de Nativi, COFADEH, for Honduras Human Rights Platform; and Richard Trumka, AFL-CIO president and former head of the United Mine Workers Union of America. Attendees reveled in music by Elena & los Fulanos, a bilingual folk rock band based in Washington, DC.

To honor this important anniversary, IPS partnered with the Chilean Embassy to produce the Sheridan Circle Memorial Service, a series of murals, and an exhibition on Orlando Letelier at the Organization for American States. At the Sheridan Circle Memorial Service, participants witnessed the historic handover between the U.S. Department of State and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet of declassified documents proving Gen. Augusto Pinochet’s role in Letelier’s assassination in Washington, D.C. IPS was honored to be present with President Bachelet and several of Ronni and Orlando’s family members at the service, including three of Orlando’s four sons: Francisco, Juan Pablo, and Cristián.

“[Orlando and Ronni] have changed us. They have in many ways moulded us. They have given to many a purpose to our lives. We are part and they are part of our hope. And they are part of what allows us to move united, because united we will overcome and be better human beings.”

OUR NEXT LEADERS

IPS is growing the next generation of leaders through our internship and fellowship programs. Each is designed to provide a combination of hands-on experience, training, mentoring, and networking.

Our flagship Next Leaders program is a ten-week paid internship and mentorship experience. The 2016 cohort of 11 young people co-created a dynamic summer curriculum and partnered with local grassroots groups like ONE DC and Jobs with Justice to gain local exposure to community organizing. A core component of this program is writing, and in 2016 our Next Leaders worked on five reports, nine media appearances, and 20 articles- including a piece in Ebony, a first for the program.

New Economy Maryland, a professional development and writing program aimed at emerging social justice leaders in the state, celebrated another successful year in Baltimore. In addition to the skills they brought back to their workplaces, this diverse group of Fellows published 15 op-eds in major papers like the Baltimore Sun to heartland media outlets all over the country.

The 2016 New Mexico Fellow Mandisa Routheni played a key leadership role in IPS work on racial justice and millennial outreach. She spearheaded an engaging summer events series, and launched our first Black History Month event series. In addition to her own writing, which was featured in U.S. News and World Report, she also served as a facilitator in the New Economy Maryland Fellowship program and will continue to serve as an adviser to the New Mexico Fellowship program.

Past, Present, & Future Support

THE NEXT GENERATION LEGACY SOCIETY

For more than half a century, the Institute for Policy Studies has played a key role of providing public scholarship to cutting-edge social movements in the U.S. and the world.

We can’t predict what new issues will emerge in the next half century and beyond, but we do know that IPS will be needed to provide the intellectual groundwork to support movement-building groups, and to speak with an unwavering independent voice- unburdened by party affiliation, yet steadfast in promoting equity, sustainability, peace, and democratic participation.

Looking forward to the future, IPS is intentionally mentoring the next generation of public scholars, especially individuals from low-income backgrounds and communities of color. Working closely with public scholars who helped build and inform the movements for social and economic equity, the new economy, demilitarization and diplomacy, and environmental justice, they will become the next generation to build on the Institute’s legacy of inspiring progressive ideas into action.

By including IPS in their estate plans through a bequest or other planned gift, members of the Next Generation Legacy Society demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that IPS is able to build a future that is more inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and democratic.

IPS would like to express our deepest gratitude toward the extraordinary commitment, generosity, and thoughtfulness of the following Next Generation Legacy Society members:

Julie Buckles
John Cavanagh
